A 21-year-old man died on Friday after he and a friend together with the mattresses they were sitting on in the back of a pickup truck became airborne, causing them to fall into a busy road.
According to the Omusati police, public relations officer Sergeant Anna Kunga, Markus Esindo and Paulus Iyambo from Okathitukathithiya village were travelling on the main road between Ruacana and Outapi at Ombandjera village.
Esindo and Iyambo were sitting atop mattresses in the back of the pickup truck when they fell into the road as they were travelling on the main road to Ruacana.
According to Kunga, the unsecured mattresses, which were on top of debris that the truck was carrying, became unsecured and flew from the vehicle, toppling over Esindo and Iyambo in the process. When Esindo hit the road he was run over by an oncoming vehicle, and died on the spot, while Iyambo was rushed to Oshakati Intermediate Hospital after he sustained severe injuries.
The unlicensed minor aged 17 years old who ran over Esindo was arrested and he is expected to appear in court in due course.
In another separate incidence, an Angolan house helper was raped at Ongulumbashe village in Omusati region.
Kunga said that the suspect entered the house helper’s bedroom at around 14h00, last week and raped the victim.
“The suspect pulled her out of the room and dragged her behind the homestead, where he began to rape her (sic),” said Kunga.
The suspect has since been arrested by the police and he is expected to appear in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court in due course.
