THE African Stars Supporters Club is accusing the club of refusing to recognise it, similar to the Namibia Football Players Union (NAFPU) also struggling to get recognised by the Namibia Premier League. The interim committee of the African Stars Supporters Club, which was formed in May 2015, claims to have written numerous letters to the club’s executive to discuss the process of official recognition but no response has been received to date.
A member of the Supporters Club’s interim committee, Menrose Harakuta said the idea of requesting the meeting was to discuss how the supporters club could benefit the team.
“We have written letters three to four times and even tried to call but their phones are forever off,” complained Harakuta.
“We really wanted to have a supporters drive that will drive fundraising campaigns and register supporters as well as establish branches countrywide but we cannot do that as we are not recognised,” he said.
Some avid supporters presumably organised themselves last year and held a workshop where they discussed how to raise funds for the club. That idea is yet to see the light of day. The discussions started when former club financier, Sidney Martin left in a huff after differences with some directors. His departure has also resulted in poor performance on the field of play to the extent that African Stars failed to challenge for the league title which was eventually won by Tigers.
An African Stars executive member, Brian Makari denied ever having received a letter from supporters who wanted to discuss the recognition of a supporters’ club.
“Did they provide you with proof or these are just baseless allegations?” he fumed, adding: “We have not met the club committee and have not seen their invitation.”
Asked if African Stars has a recognised supporters club, Makari said he has not seen one, although there were previous attempts to have one.
Makari said several people have in the past requested funds from the club to run projects under the guise of a supporters’ club but “people just took the money and disappeared”.
