THE annual Designer’s Fashion Show (DFS) has been growing from strength to strength, with the seventh season of the show scheduled for August 6.
The brainchild of Hendrina Shikalepo, the fashion show was started in 2013 with the aim of providing young designers who are often overlooked with a platform to showcase their works and build their brands.
DFN has gone on from being an annual show to being a biennial event, held at the beginning and the middle of every year. While the show typically takes place in March and July, it was slightly delayed this year, and will now be held in August and November.
Shikalepo said she was pleased by how well the fashion show was doing, especially looking at how difficult things were when they started off a little over four years ago.
“I know it’s not easy trying to host your own fashion show. That’s why we have tried to create collaboration with other designers. We have created a bond with other designers, we are now a family of designers working towards achieving the goal of empowering other designers stand alone and show case their brands,” she said of the progress they have made.
Although the next fashion show will only have eight designers showcasing their work, Shikalepo said she hoped they would be able to host at least 20 designers in their next show, using previous experiences as templates on how to improve on the shows.
“I have been getting a tough time from the designers. I think Namibian designers need to learn how fashion shows are done on international scales. We need to hone our skills and make sure we rise to international standards. We need to assure quality in the product produced and this is a challenge because designers are doing things at the last minute. They do not pay attention detail, some lack creativity and produce garments of a poor quality,” she lamented about some of the horrors she had witnessed among some local designers.
However she stressed that it had not deterred her and that in as much as the fashion show was aimed to create a platform for your designers, it also allowed for them to network amongst each other and learn from one another.
“We will keep pushing to reach greater heights
