THE former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works and Transport, Peter Mwatile who was transferred to the department of Veterans’ Affairs as a top official at the level of permanent secretary has been demoted to an executive Director in the Office of former President Hifikepunye Pohamba.
Secretary to Cabinet George Simataa termed his demotion as a “normal transfer.”
According to sources at the department of Veterans’ Affairs which falls under the Office of the Vice President, Mwatile was detached from the department about three weeks ago.
“We placed him there (Veterans’ Affairs) when his service was needed. He is now the executive director in the office of former President Hifikepunye Pohamba. There is nothing untoward, it’s a normal transfer,” said Simataa who did not entertain further questions seeking clarity said on Friday.
Although all executive directors are earning the same salaries as Permanent Secretaries, Mwatile will not have any significant role to play as it was the case at the Ministry of Works.
Asked why was he removed, how he felt and if he does not feel that he has been demoted Mwatile decline to comment saying it was not his question to answer. Mwatile’s reign as the chief accounting officer at the Ministry of Works embraced a period that saw many businesspeople lobbying for his removal. It was also believed that Mwatile’s stand on several top tenders in the country had caused his downfall at the ministry.
Last year when Mwatile was moved to the department of veteran affairs, Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa- Amadhila said Mwatile would not be the Permanent Secretary of the department but a top official there. She further said the current PS of Veterans’ Affairs Hopelong Ipinge would remain the accounting officer in the Vice President’s Office.
