The third and final edition of the Standard Bank Super Cup launched in the capital today will feature the four teams in the top five bracket of the 2015/16 soccer season.
Apart from the 2015/16 MTC Premiership champion, Tigers FC this year’s edition will feature the four teams which competed fiercely against Tigers FC for top honours last season.
Runners up, Black Africa FC and third place Tura Magic including African Stars and Otjiwarongo-based Mighty Gunners have been chosen to compete in the Standard Bank Super Cup preliminary competition.
Normally, the Standard Bank Supper Cup was contested by the Premiership champion and the winner of the NFA Cup but the NFA Cup did not take place due to lack of a sponsor.
Explaining the methodology during the launch, was NFA’s official Tim Isaacs who said there could not be an outright competitor to take on Tigers FC because of the NFA Cup that did not take place, thus the organizing committee decided to give a breather to the four teams that demonstrated zeal and stiff competition during the 2015/16 season.
The launch at the NFA Soccer House, saw Tura Magic FC drawn against Black Africa FC while African Stars is pitted against Mighty Gunners.
The preliminary competition is scheduled for 13 August at the Sam Nujoma Stadium, with the two wining sides expected to take on each other the same day. The eventual winner takes on Tigers FC on 10 September.
Isaacs said the prize monies remain as it was during the initial competition of which the winner will pocket N$500 000 and the loser take home N$200 000, respectively.
There will be no prize monies for the teams competing in the preliminary round of the competition but provisions would be made to assists the teams chosen.
Meanwhile, this year’s edition mark the end of the contractual agreement between the NFA and Standard Bank as the two signed a three-year contract.
Hopes are that renegotiations of the contract would resume later this year for a possible extension. The financial institution has injected a cool N$ three million in the competition.
African Stars defeated Tigers FC by 2-1 in the 2015 Standard Bank Super Cup final.
