PLEASE allow me space in your highly esteemed newspaper to inform the nation about grieving issues affecting teachers.
It is really saddening to note that every year when the results of grade 11 & 12 external examination are released all blame points to teachers. But, has the nation stopped and thought about the various challenges teachers face on a daily basis. Let me highlight some of these challenges.
Another bone of contention is the discrimination of the Namibian justice system when it comes to other civil servants and private individuals who do the immoral thing and impregnate the school children, yet no action is taken against them. Teachers are an exception, since the code of conduct for the teaching service constitutes a serious misconduct which is normally dealt with in terms of Namibia`s Public Service Act. This misconduct by default leads to dismissal. This is pure discrimination of the highest order. This practice should apply to all citizens of Namibia. Other civil servants only feel the wrath of the law when they engage in sexual activities with under-age school girls and they get charged with a criminal offence under the Combating of Immoral Practice Act.
Unless the government comes up with strategies to minimise some of these challenges the Namibian education system will continue to be faced with problems.
