THE Oshakati Circuit under the Oshana Directorate of Education has launched an enquiry into how the management of Erundu Combined School reportedly embezzled an estimated N$200 000.
Although sources privy to the matter said that the enquiry is directed at the school’s principal Pinehas Shipena who allegedly admitted to using part of the money, circuit officials said that no individual was singled out yet. Shipena however rubbished the allegations saying that the enquiry was a general one into the school’s financial affairs. “Although I am aware of the inspection, we are not allowed to speak to newspapers. As for the inspection being directed at me, well those are perceptions. It is not against me. It is just a general look into the school’s finances,” Shipena retorted.
The enquiry comes after abnormalities in the school’s finances were detected showing how some educators with signatory powers wrote out cheques but could not account for how the money was spent. “The circuit can confirm an inspection against the administration of the school but not necessarily any individual. Yes maybe against the principal as the accounting officer of the school but we are not pointing fingers at this stage,” an official said on condition of anonymity. The official added that the circuit is in the middle of the financial inspection into the school’s coffers after anomalies were reported to the office. “There are abnormalities in the school’s finances that we are inspecting although no charges were given yet. This will only be determined after our investigations and a report on our findings will be forwarded to the Director’s office for further action.” Although the official declined to shed light on the amounts involved, sources said that the figure stands at around N$200 000. According to sources, the educators implicated used the money for their personal activities including the renovation of their homes. “The inspectors have been looking into the school’s finances for some time now after it emerged that some educators have been signing out cheques and not proving what the money was used for. In fact some have even been receiving the invoices personally to avoid anyone from picking up the matter. Sadly for them the truth always comes out.
