THERE is a theory going around that the more you leave your hair unwashed, the faster one’s hair grows.
Of course it is an unhygienic theory, however there are people who are so convinced by it that they practice it and swear that it is the secret behind their long hair.
There are various reasons why people think that the dirt in their hair makes it grow, although the most common one people assume is that their scalp acts the same way sand does, the more manure/ fertilizer the more something grows in it.
While there is some truth to the theory, it’s not quite exactly what most people think. The reason why it is said that not washing ones hair makes it grow is the fact that is because most shampoos strip the hair of their natural oils that is supposed to make them grow.
Without these natural oils, it takes hair twice as long to grow. The more one uses shampoo, the more the hair appears to lack lustre and life because it lacks oils.
However the alternative of leaving one’s hair dirty also does not help it grow. Of course at some point it will seem to boost a growth spurt, however eventually it also prevents the hair from growing and not to mention the fact that looks and smells really badly.
Split ends and damaged tips can make it seem as if one’s hair is not growing as fast as it should be. As the hair grows, the damaged ends continuously break off making it seem as if the hair is not growing. So instead of not washing your hair, rid yourself of split ends.
The recommended amount of time to wash one’s hair is every other day or every two days, that’s if you do not have braids or hair extensions. If you do have braids or a weave, once a week should do, but make sure the hair dries thoroughly.
Make sure you use conditioner every time you wash your hair, if you have leave-in conditioner, it’s better because it stays in longer and protects your hair longer.
Washing hair also removes Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes hair loss. Bacteria found on the scalp causes dandruff, which causes irritation which can cause hair loss.
Eating foods that are rich in protein is also better than not washing one’s hair. Hair is made up of fibrous protein called keratin, so the more protein one eats the faster it grows.
So please, if you haven’t been washing your hair, now would be the right time to start doing so.
