IN a devastating incident, a 23 month-old baby boy drowned in a bucket of water in Okahandja on Saturday, just a day before his second birthday. His mother was reportedly hanging clothes on a line a few meters away, when the tragedy happened.
Residents in the area said that the baby’s mother had left her only child with a neighbour for barely five minutes when the distressing incident occurred. The baby, who was set to turn two several hours after his death, was reportedly found submerged in a bucket filled with water that he could not get out of. The baby’s devastated parents are now planning a funeral instead of celebrating their only child’s second birthday.
Police spokesperson, Chief Inspector Kauna Shikwambi confirmed the incident saying that an inquest docket had been opened. According to Shikwambi, preliminary investigations suggest that the baby had been left in the care of a neighbour with other children moments before his death. The neighbour reportedly left the children unsupervised when she went into her house, only to return to the horrifying incident.
“The incident happened at around 4 p.m. on Saturday after the mother left her baby in the care of a neighbour. The neighbour left the baby playing with other children and went into her house. She returned to screams and people crying and only then did she learn that the baby had drowned,” Shikwambi said.
Shikwambi also said that the baby’s body will be sent for an autopsy to determine exactly what transpired on that fateful afternoon when he lost his life.
A resident who witnessed the incident and preferred anonymity said that the sad story is a reminder why parents need to remember that looking away for even a moment can be dangerous.
The resident said that somehow the baby managed to tip head first into the bucket filled with water adding that it was too late for the baby’s mother and onlookers to save his life. He was declared dead at the scene.
Because they were planning his second birthday party, the baby’s parents’ circumstances have changed drastically. They are now planning a funeral to give their little boy a proper farewell.
