Swakopmund residents will in November be treated to top flight sevens rugby action when the second edition of the Safland Sevens is billed for the coastal town come November.
The Safland Sevens is expected to showcase brilliant talent from teams invited across the globe with defending champions, South Africa’s Blitzbokke destine to fiercely defend their maiden title.
Event Organizer, Willem Strauss, told a media briefing that invitations has been extended to countries like Unites States, Argentina, Germany, Kenya, Italy and Zimbabwe.
Strauss said the second hosting of this tournament will once again see world class Sevens outfits in action.
He said with the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series due to kick off in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) later this year, the tournament serve as an ideal platform for a number of World Series teams to home their skills.
The second edition will feature the newly appointed Namibian Sevens team’s coach, Jurie Booysen, the opportunity to test his team against some of the best Sevens players in the world.
Defending champions, Blitzbokke, bronze medallist at the recent Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil are said to be favourites but USA, Argentina and Kenya have all won their world tour with Germany expected to be a favourite due to the historical factors between Swakopmund and Germany.
Strauss said the move of the tournament was due to the co-sponsor from Swakopmund Dome.
Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Elizma Theron, said the tournament has the potential to boost Sevens rugby in the country.
“We saw the massive boost that the Olympic Games had on the already popular Sevens games, and if this tournament could help us get to the Games in 2020 in Tokyo, Japan than it will be worth it.
