The 2016 Namibia Sport Awards that will recognize the various achievements of the country’s sportsmen and women has officially been launched here in the capital.
Speaking at the launch, Namibia Sports Commission (NSC), Acting Chief Administrator, Walter Haseb said the annual event scheduled for 28 October, at the Windhoek Country Club and Resort will honour the true champions of the Namibian sport personalities.
The glittering event under theme ‘ Thriving in the Desert’ and named after the !Nara plant ( a plant endemic to the Namib Desert) will honour athletes who did exceptionally well during the national, regional, inter-continental and at international events such as the Commonwealth Games and the Summer Olympic Games including Paralympic Games.
The event is expected to be graced by close to 600 guests, who will witness and acknowledge the deserving athletes on the night.
The Namibia Telecommunications Limited (MTC) has announced a sponsorship of N$ 650 000 towards the hosting of the event while Nampower (power utility company) announced an award sponsorship of N$ 500 000.
The Nampower sponsorship will cater for the prize monies of the Disability Sportsman and woman of the Year and the Junior Sportsman and woman, respectively.
The submission of nominees by the different sport codes and umbrella bodies kicked off last month.
Athletes nominated will compete in the following categories:
MTC Sports Achiever of the Year, Nampower Sportsman with Disability of the Year, Nampower Sportswoman of the Year with Disability, MTC Sportsman of the Year, MTC Sportswoman of the Year, MTC Junior Sportsman of the Year, MTC Junior Sportswoman of the Year, Nampower Junior Sportsman of the Year, Nampower Junior Sportswoman of the Year, Tafel Lager Sports Team of the Year, Most Improved Sportsperson of the Year, Development programme of the Year, Coca-Cola Coach of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Coca-Cola Umpire/Referee of the Year, FNB Sports Journalist of the Year, NWR Chairperson of the Year, Lifetime Achiever Award and Best School Development Programme of the Year
