I totally support the ideas expressed in the article ‘Some thoughts about NASA ‘ORACLES’ mission’ in the Confidente edition of September 22, 2016.
Indeed, our Government didn’t carefully think over NASA’s proposal and it puts its people in harm’s way. We know numerous instances around the world when presence of a sizeable number of the US nationals, especially militaries, was sensitising terrorists and they were starting their barbaric attacks. In such cases Washington normally increases its military presence in a country and unleashes wars against terrorists. But I wouldn’t like that one day my beautiful peaceful country turned into a mess like Libya, Mali, Somalia, etc.
On the other hand it is embarrassing to hear accusations that Namibia is aiding AFRICOM to take root in Africa. But these accusations can be true. For instance people frequently detect the US Military attaché at the Walvis Bay International airport. What is his business there? Probably he comes to check how his subordinates, who disguise themselves as scientists, guard the NASA laboratory? How many of them are there?
It is also sad to believe that our Government has a desire for political convergence with the United States of America. Less than 30 years ago that country was on the other side of barricade. It was supporting our enemy. Are we prepared to forget this story already and to trust our assailant? Meanwhile, experience of many countries including in Africa demonstrates that flirting with Americans has never finished with a happy end. Washington has constant desire to dictate a partner and to subject it to its will. The same may happen with Namibia. But I don’t want to be an American slave.
Bearing in mind all stated above I agree that the Government’s decision on NASA ‘ORACLES’ project is wrong and it should be repealed immediately. I also appeal to our living veterans to recall their lost comrades in the battle against apartheid and their American allies and to join the ranks. If we keep our mouths shut now, tomorrow it may be late!
