OVER the past 12 months, Strand Hotel Swakopmund – a property under the O&L Leisure portfolio – hosted more than 35 000 guests and has become a preferred destination for both local and international conferences and events.
Officially opened by the Head of State, Dr. Hage Geingob at a special opening ceremony on November 6 2015 (while doors opened to the public on October 9 2015), the Strand Hotel Swakopmund has become a household name on the lips of both local travellers and tourists to the country.
Managing Director of O&L Leisure a subsidiary of the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group, Terence Makari said, “We have seen great support from all the local Swakopmunders, Namibians as a whole and international visitors. We are grateful for the support we have and remain focused on exceeding our guests and visitors’ expectations in our quest to become Namibia’s most loved hotel.”
Over the past 12 months, Strand Hotel Swakopmund was host to many events which contributed to this hotel regarded as a venue of choice for conferences and other international events.
Makari added that the Presidential Inauguration on the 6th of November 2015 by Dr. Hage Geingob tops the list. The production of ‘The Mummy Reboot’ whose key stars were Tom Cruise and Courtney Vance was done at Rössing Mountain, whilst the Strand Hotel Swakopmund played host to the leading cast, directors and producers of the movie. In addition to this, the hotel hosted the first live broadcast of the famous KYKNET programme ‘Toks & Tjops’ outside the borders of South Africa, and a number of prestigious international conferences have been hosted by the hotel at the Strand Hotel Banqueting and Conference Centre.
While no further or additional development is in the pipeline for the Strand Hotel Swakopmund in the near future, focus is on optimising the current facilities and creating memorable experiences for all guests to this 4-star establishment.
“We have seen our occupancies trading well above our expectations and have hosted to date over 35 000 guests. Our greatest challenge, like with any other new property, has been resolving the infrastructural hurdles with which we have made great progress, along with our contractors in completing and rectifying these hurdles. Most of these were building, mechanical and plumbing related.” said Makari.
Stand-outs and most memorable moments for Makari over the past year include hosting senior Government officials and world renowned celebrities (film stars). What makes Makari even more proud is the hotel’s consistent climb on TripAdvisor’s rankings.
“Strand Hotel Swakopmund is rated number 2 in Swakopmund, whilst all three our restaurants (The Ocean Cellar; The Brewer & Butcher, and The Farmhouse Deli) are amongst the top six recommended restaurants on TripAdvisor. This reaffirms our continued commitment and dedication to service excellence.”
Constructed at a cost of more than N$360 million, the Strand Hotel Swakopmund currently employs 260 fulltime staff.
