THE residents of Okahao town in the Omusati region are fearing for their lives in the wake of a gang of boys which has been terrorising the residents of the northern town for about five months.
According to the residents, the group, known as ‘Combo family’, moves around the area threatening and robbing, and has been accused of housebreaking and theft. The perpetrators are apparently well-known boys from the area, most being school dropouts.
“The Combo group is deteriorating Okahao town because residents are living in fear because of this group (sic).
“We wish (Inspector) Fonsech (Khomas regional community affairs officer) comes here even for just a month, so that these elements … will boil in a hot pot,” a resident told Confidente.
The residents believe that the group is being dealt with leniently as the members are allegedly children of prominent members of society.
The residents alleged that most of the group members are the sons of well-known local businessmen and police officers in the town.
“This group is free to do its criminal act because once they get arrested there is a negotiation for immediate release because they are from the houses of those that are having money. If this is a matter … community members will take the law into their hands to hinder this barbaric act.
Okahao station commander, Inspector Anna Kakwambi confirmed the presence of the group in the town which has a population of 1 665 according to the 2011 census, saying she had heard of the group from the residents but has never met the notorious group.
“It’s difficult to arrest them because there is no evidence they had been involved in criminal activities,” she said, despite Okahao town council alerting its residents on October 11 about house breaking incidents.
The town council wrote, “It is reported that there are criminals breaking into houses during the day. Let’s be on the lookout and report any suspicious movements at our neighbours’ houses (sic).
