EMBATTLED deputy minister of Land Reform Bernardus Swartbooi was earlier today told again by President Hage Geingob to apologise to the Minister of Land Reform Utoni Nujoma for statements he allegedly uttered at a meeting two weeks ago at Hoachanas regarding the land resettlement programme.
However, according to the Minister of Presidential Affairs, Frans Kapofi in a statement, Swartbooi refused to apologise to Nujoma and offered to resign instead.
However Swartbooi hasn’t yet sent his resignation letter to the President.
“During the meeting, the President pointed out that the Deputy Minister was appointed to serve under the Minister, support him and assist him at all times in execution of his functions. Swartbooi’s other quoted comments that he doesn’t work for Utoni Nujoma but for Geingob are also incorrect and therefore form the basis for a demand for an apology. The President further explained that despite differences of opinion that may exist between the Deputy Minister and the Minister, the choice by the Deputy Minister to use a public platform to launch an attack on his Minister was inappropriate. This is because there are many appropriate avenues through which such differences could have been handled,” Kapofi said.
Kapofi added that Geingob met Swartbooi at State House and in attendance were the Vice President Dr. Nickey Iyambo, Prime Minister, Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila among others.
“The purpose of the meeting was for the President to explain the need for an apology, which was requested of the Deputy Minister in relation to recent public comments he is reported to have made in relation to Honourable Utoni Nujoma, Minister of Land Reform.
“The meeting was also called to clarify the contents of the letter he received on the subject and to further assist him where he might have required additional explanations. The President reiterated the point that Honourable Swartbooi should apologise. However, the Deputy Minister refused apologise and instead offered to resign from his position as the Deputy Minister of Land Reform. The President is awaiting the letter of resignation from Honourable Swartbooi.”
