THE Namibia Football Association (NFA), president Frans Mbidi, said annual grants received from the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) cannot be used for the participation by national junior teams at international events.
The NFA boss was responding to a question by Confidente on why the Association does not utilise grants given by both FIFA and CAF to fund the junior teams’ participation in tournaments such as the COSAFA under 20 Cup.
The NFA recently withdrew Namibia’s Under youth side from the Cosafa Under 20 tournament scheduled to take place in South Africa next month on account of lack of funds.
Mbidi said the association gets grants from FIFA and CAF for specific programmes and that those grants cannot be diverted to activities that were not intended for.
“I really want you to be very clear on this one as I don’t want to be misquoted and we must educate the public out there on the laws and operations of football,” said Mbidi.
“We have what we call targeted code of responsibilities that only has been approved individually by FIFA and CAF,” he stressed.
When asked if the association had submitted the budget proposal to the line Ministry for the Under 20 national side participation at the COSAFA Cup the football boss said that proposal was sent to Government in good time.
He said Government’s allocation of N$8 million to cater for all national teams was never enough but that the amount was also cut to N$6 million in the current financial year.
Mbidi said Government has recently issued a directive to ministries to cut their budgets. That move, has affected the sports ministry from whence the NFA gets its funds for national team programmes.
Mbidi said despite the current economic challenges, he is anticipating a better future.
“Namibia has taken upon itself to improve the situation for many more years to come,” he stressed.
“It’s time we tighten our belts as there is nothing that we can do now. I am very optimistic that a solution will be found very soon,” said the hopeful NFA president.
