WHEN a group of businessmen, several senior Swapo politicians including regional coordinators and Cabinet ministers assembled in Okalongo, Omusati region in December to engineer a “plot” against President Hage Geingob – the motive was clear – tribalism.
It is known that the interest of the corrupt business clique pushing the anti-Hage agenda in pursuit of the decisive Swapo party congress this year – is greed, entitlement and patronage.
It is however unfortunate that they have resorted to apartheid style tribal politics, disguising their corrupt ambitions under a tribal cloth against the non-Oshiwambo president because of his refusal to endorse their corrupt schemes and ultimate State capture.
Their failed desperate attempts to use the State machinery to lure a multi-billion dollar bilateral Angolan-Namibian oil importation deal was the obvious one but the most clear one, is the non-renewal of tenders irregularly awarded in their favour during the previous administration which has forced them into collusion with some rogue politicians to resort to tribal connivance.
The infamous anti-Hage plotting session at Okalongo last month claimed that the unfavourable economic conditions were due to the Geingob-led administration. But they refused to outline to their stooges the real factors that worsened the country’s liquidity are the oil-storage facility which has been recklessly inflated from N$900 million to N$5.5 billion, the Namibian dollar-Angolan Kwanza currency conversation which has cost Government close to a staggering N$5 billion, the N$9.1 billion Targeted Intervention Programme for Employment and Economic Growth (Tipeeg), the Neckartal Dam inflated at N$2.6 billion, the multimillion dollar mass housing project and the corrupt Customs- X-Ray scanner deal where Government lost about N$500 million, and the inflated road tenders which happened prior to Geingob’s administration.
The culture of non-tax compliance was cultivated and harboured in that era hence businesspeople who benefited from such schemes appear shocked at new reforms pushing for tax compliance.
Apart from thwarting State capture attempts, essentially, the Geingob’s administration has been busy spending its energy and efforts on rectifying these costly errors during the past 22 months since assuming power.
Instead of complementing Geingob to reverse the economic damages incurred during the previous administration, a bunch of cold-hearted tribalists in Cabinet have been conniving with their corrupt BEE paymasters to distabilise Government.
The same Ministers and some politicians have been consumed in the tribal agenda of the corrupt
BEE entitled elites which has begun to permeate in the politico-economic make-up of our society.
They have been desperately trying to accentuate a tribal reasoning to establish a dangerous tribal consensus in the way we conduct politics ahead of the decisive Swapo Congress this year.
We should not forget that during the Swapo-led protracted struggle for freedom, tribal loyalties were set aside in favour of a united front to conquer apartheid and colonial domination. During the struggle for political and economic freedom there was a deliberate attempt to downplay people’s pride in the tribes they belonged to, especially when it meant the denigration of another.
Cabinet Ministers and senior politicians co-opted into the tribal agenda by greedy businessmen should honour and respect the ethos of non-racialism, regionalism and ethnicism, which premised the foundation of Swapo. If not addressed while in its nascent stages, this demon will like a deranged anaconda swallow us recklessly and destroy the beautiful country we have.
