PRESIDENT of the Confederation of University and College Sports Association (CUCSA) of Southern Africa, Ben Naobeb, has confirmed that Angola has been stripped of its rights to host the 2018 edition of the student games.
It has been reported that Angola has been silent on the hosting of the Games as the country has not communicated anything to CUCSA executive or to member countries.
Naobeb confirmed that Angola has not been forthcoming nor have they given any guarantees on hosting the event.
“The CUCSA executive will basically have a meeting in April to discuss the next possible hosting nation of the 2018 CUCSA Games. I cannot tell which country will host the event,” said Naobeb.
He said the hosting of the CUCSA Games is done alphabetically, and as such the next country in line will be Botswana or Lesotho.
However, Naobeb said, all depends on the willingness of the member countries to host the Games, and if Botswana is not keen on hosting the events the next possible candidate would be Lesotho as the alphabetical list indicates.
Namibia last hosted the CUCSA Games in 2012, and can only host again after Mozambique has had its turn, in terms of the alphabetical order.
Asked if there are any penalties meted out to members who fail to honour their hosting obligations, Naobeb said there is no punishment as hosting is a voluntary undertaking by member countries.
“We really do not deal with any punishment if a country forfeits its right to host the games. The responsibility just falls on the other member countries to willingly avail themselves to host the event,” said Naobeb.
CUCSA president said the student games are very important as they help higher learning institutions within Southern African Development Community (SADC) to network and engage in sporting competitions at international level.
Naobeb has also encouraged tertiary institutions and colleges to adopt CUCSA sporting programmes to avoid a clash with academics programmes and the championships.
He said CUCSA’s wish is to have more games and students in the competitions, hence the need to discuss the calendar of events so that it can be enhanced.
