THE Namibian Youth on Renewable Energy (NAYORE) is a new NGO which is promoting the mainstreaming of youth participation within the growing renewable energy sector. NAYORE aims to raise awareness and create a youth dialogue on the benefits of using renewable energy in Namibia and subsequently Africa through mobilising, creating platforms, advocating and promoting entrepreneurial initiatives amongst the youth.
One of NAYORE’s aims is to stand as the voice for young people in the energy sector and its vision is to advocate for renewable energy whilst engaging youth and other relevant stakeholders in the industry. Projects in which the application of renewable energy will generate a social good which can benefit from youth advocacy will be identified.
To gain support, NAYORE will align the private and public the resources required to bring these projects to completion by placing them on relevant platforms.
Abraham Lincoln (former US president) once said that the best way to predict the future is to create it. This means that we hold the power to control the future of our planet’s environment. Scientists recently relabelled our current geological epoch. Human activity has been the dominant influence on the climate and the environmental change. The burning of fossil fuels has been the number one contributor to excess greenhouse gas accumulation in the atmosphere.
The reliance on traditional, non renewable energy sources has not only taken a very negative toll on the environment, but has also given a rise to civil strife in some areas. As the world’s population increases, so does the energy demand. It is clear that traditional, non renewable sources of energy are no longer environmentally or economically viable. A lot of African countries have joined the world wide transitioning from non renewable to more economically viable renewable energy sources. Namibia is proudly one of those countries which are prioritising this transition.
NAYORE is currently working on renewable energy awareness by identifying youth with the potential to take the benefits of renewable energy to larger audiences across the country and developing them as champions of renewable energy through training and participation in relevant programmes.
This will be done by operating and tracking a network of ‘NAYORE Champions’, who will work on renewable energy projects.
NAYORE will initiate, promote, fund, support and inspire research and development on renewable energy technologies. Using the NAYORE Champions Channel, innovative applications of renewable energy from around the world, will be identified and developed focusing on making use of local renewable energy resources. NAYORE will also train young people on renewable energy, teach communities on energy efficiency and hold workshops with youth on other renewable energy related issues.
NAYORE will aim to spread knowledge and information on entrepreneurship as well as finding internship and employment opportunities for youth; in the public sector from power utilities.
NAYORE will seek out collaborations and coordinationation between different stakeholders to facilitate funds towards bringing electricity supply to less vulnerable areas that are off-grid, by creating new projects to provide those areas with clean and renewable energy such as distribution of solar jars.
NAYORE will work on advocating the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 with all its targets and other related development goals in future while also ensuring to incorporating the impact and relationship between energy and climate change in all projects and programmes.
The renewable energy revolution can be compared to that of the internet. The paradigm has indeed shifted; NAYORE aims to change the people’s perception on sustainability and conservation through the use of renewable energy.
