NETBALL action has sincerely kicked off in the Khomas region, and Governor Laura McLeod-Katjirua has called on the corporate sector to seriously invest in netball. Speaking at the opening of the Khomas Netball League Open Championship, McLeod-Katjirua said she is aware that sport is going through some challenges lately and netball is among those codes that are severely affected. “This is very unfortunate because statistics indicate that netball is the number one sport for girls and women in Namibia. Sadly, however, we have seen how participation in netball has dwindled at school and club levels because of lack of financial support,” she said. “My humble plea is therefore to the corporate sector in Namibia, to consider investing in the future of the girl child by sponsoring the Khomas Netball League as well as others around the country,” pleaded Katjirua. She said an investment in sport is an investment in the health of the people and by extension the health of the nation.
“Participating in netball and other sports reduces incidences of people going to hospitals and clinics to seek medical attention. Sports help with mental alertness in school and in the work place, that is why it is essential to play netball and other sports”.
The Governor said it very important to encourage the girl child to participate in netball by ensuring that all the stumbling blocks are eliminated.
“It is with that in mind that I encourage the Khomas Netball Region to not only focus on this region but to also encourage other regions to establish their netball structures. It helps no one if only Khomas or two other regions are actively involved in netball. If we perpetuate that we also weaken our national netball teams at all levels,” stressed the Governor.
McLeod-Katjirua said Khomas must assist the national netball body to make sure that netball is taken to every corner of the country. The girls are eager to play but the opportunities are not offered, she added.
“We need to change that.”
The Governor called on the participants to use the tournament to renew the netball spirit in the country. “We were known for taking on bigger and stronger nations. But, today we don’t feature anywhere on the international ranking list”. Below are the winners of the Khomas Netball.
