THE Oshikoto education directorate is in dire need of more school hostels in the region in order to safeguard the pupils and ensure better performance; as a result the directorate needs more boarding facilities to be constructed.
Most of the school accommodation in the region is currently full to capacity and many pupils are forced to erect their own corrugated iron shacks at school surroundings.
Since 2012, only a total of 204 pupils from non-boarding schools qualified for enrollment at institutions of higher learning compared to a total of 2 697 pupils from boarding schools.
These figures triggered an urgent stakeholders meeting to strategise on the improvement of grade 12 results, last week at Ondangwa.
Vicky Uugwanga, a school inspector said that many of the pupils who qualify for admission for tertiary studies are from boarding schools because hostels create better chances for extra time with teachers compared to non-boarding schools.
“Hostel is a need for better performance and not a luxury and the safety of pupils is guaranteed. The need for more hostels in the region is a necessity in order to avoid high pupil failure rate,” said Uugwanga.
She listed some of the challenges facing non-boarding schools such as; a lack of commitment from both the teachers and pupils, lack of study resources, no adult supervision, and exposure of pupils to dangers such as rape.
Education director, Lameck Kafidi said that in the past years, the Oshikoto education directorate has observed a high failure rate mainly attributed to poor performance and hardships faced by many non-boarding schools in the region.
“Even though we seem to be doing well nationally, our directorate is still faced with numerous challenges such a lack of ablution facilities. We need a throughput on how we can overcome these challenges,” said Kafidi.
Ministry of Education, Permanent Secretary Sanet Steenkamp said that her ministry this year set aside a budget of about N$500 million aimed at renovating classrooms, hostels and building sanitation facilities at schools in all the regions.
