The Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) Central Committee says that President Hage Geingob should not be contested at the upcoming Swapo Party Congress, “in order to preserve unity and continuity”.
This was one of the outcomes of Saturday’s SPYL Central Committee meeting, according to a tweet on the youth wing’s Twitter account.
“Central Committee also deliberated on the matter of the President of the Swapo Party, it therefore endorsed the maintenance of one centre of power, in respect of the Presidency, therefore, endorsing the position of the President to be uncontested, in order to preserve unity and continuity,” the tweet said.
The SPYL Central Committee also announced that it has nominated National Youth Council Executive Director, Mandela Kapere, Efraim Nekongo and Meriam Hidipo as its Secretary candidates for the upcoming youth wing congress in August.
Speaking at a media conference on Saturday, Acting SPYL Secretary, Veikko Nekundi, also confirmed Christine Haindaka, Tuyeni Kandume, Mogale Karimbue and Immanuel Shikongo as the candidates for the Deputy Secretary position.
Nekundi said the league’s congress will be held from 24 to 27 August in the Zambezi region. He also urged all the candidates to conduct themselves in the spirit of comradeship, while upholding the values of the organisation, during the run-up to the congress.
He also emphasised the critical importance of mentoring and grooming young people.
Nekundi said that these young people should be exposed to various positions in the Swapo Party structures, government, foreign missions and parastatals, so leadership and corporate governance skills can be instilled in them.
