THE International University of Management (IUM) Student Representative Council (SRC), on behalf of the IUM student community, has honoured last week’s National Youth Week, along with other Namibian youth, by carrying out different social responsibility activities.
Organised by the National Youth Council (NYC), National Youth Week took place from 25 to 28 April. The opening ceremony of the official National Youth Day was held on 27 April at the UN Plaza in Katutura.
The IUM students’ first activity was a cleaning campaign, which was held on 25 April, in conjunction with the City of Windhoek.
They cleaned up Dorado Park Main Campus and its surrounding areas.
The second activity was a charity donation, which was also formed part of the activities done through the Office of the Dean of Students.
The aim was to give back to the less fortunate, and to make a difference in their lives. Items such as clothing, bedding, food, money and household equipment were collected from students and IUM staff.
The first donation of food items and toiletries was held at the SOS Children’s Village in Khomasdal on 26 April. The village houses 88 vulnerable children and young people, who have lost their parents. The village thus helps them to grow up in a caring, family environment.
On the same day, a donation of food items and toiletries was also given to the Home of Good Hope in the Goreangab informal settlement in Katutura. The home feeds 600 vulnerable children between the ages of one and 18, from Monday to Saturday.
On 27 April, the IUM student team donated clothing and bedding, and cleaned the Katutura Old Age Home.
The team then proceeded to a soup kitchen in the Havana informal settlement where they prepared lunch for the children and spent the afternoon with them, doing extramural activities. On 28 April, the IUM team cleaned the Hephata Care Centre in Katutura’s Wanaheda township.
The centre houses mentally handicapped people. The team concluded National Youth Week with a visit to the Windhoek Central Hospital Psychiatry Ward, where they delivered toiletries to patients.
