THE national netball team is set to compete at the Africa Netball Championship, which will take place from 22 to 30 June in Kampala, Uganda.
In an interview with Confidente this week, All Namibia Netball Association (ANNA) Secretary-General, Imelda Nerongo, said the national netball team is aiming to recapture their world ranking in Uganda, which they lost due to lack of participation.
Currently, 36 countries have a world ranking, with Australia number one and Argentina at the rear of the table.
“We are currently out of the world ranking bracket, and our objective is to get our ranking back. Yes, there are a number of international competitions in future, but I am afraid I cannot go into the details of those competitions at this stage,” said Nerongo.
“We have selected a task team and experienced players, who will be moulded together with our young players, but the names have not yet been endorsed by the executive.”
Nerongo said that they will make use of some of the players who represented the country at the World Student Games last year.
She said that the team will soon start with its preparations for the Uganda games, “with an emphasis on doing extremely well”.
Currently, only the Khomas region has an active netball league, as the country’s 13 other regions are still struggling to establish fully-fledged leagues. Netball is categorised as an A-list sport code.
Khomas hosted their opening tournament in March, in which teams like African Stars, Tigers Sport Club, Black Africa, Tura Magic, the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), Trustco and the University of Namibia (Unam) competed.
Most of the players to be selected for the national side will be drawn from these teams.
Nerongo said that players will also be selected from the team that competed at the 2016 Africa Netball World Youth qualifiers in Gaborone.
ANNA will receive N$150 000 for their international participation from the Namibia Sports Commission for the 2017/18 season, while N$50 000 will go towards administration.
