DEPUTY Minister of Environment and Tourism Tommy Nambahu has called for an end to de-campaigning and infighting in the Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL), while also calling for members to reject “hate politics”.
He has also urged the youth wing to elect leaders on merit, and not because they appear charismatic or because they dress better than others.
Nambahu was speaking at last week’s Khomas SPYL elective congress, at which he set the scene for the upcoming national youth wing congress, which takes place in Katima Mulilo in August.
He encouraged the youth to be united and to stop with their infighting, while guarding against negative politicking and de-campaigning each other.
“If I had to ask you why you are fighting, honestly there is no disagreement between you; there is a certain agenda that you are fighting on behalf of somebody else. You literally have no issues against each other,” Nambahu said.
“If a senior leader comes to you, no matter how old he is, and is talking about hate politics, reject him with the contempt he deserves.”
In addition, the deputy minister said that elders should allow the youth to talk to each other, so that they can correct each other.
“We have this problem; our elders think we don’t watch them. They think we are not smart. You will see them meeting with leaders of opposition all over the place, praising each other, but as soon as I am heard speaking to one of you, there is question mark,” he explained.
Nambahu urged party leaders to engage the youth and not to shout at them.
“I am not also encouraging you to shout at us. It is time to respect our leaders, but also to ask from them to treat us as equals and deserving members of the party.
“You have the obligation to be respected and they have the obligation to respect you. It cannot be allowed and it cannot be correct that you are a B Degree, Masters’ Degree or PhD holder or an accountant, but you are still treated as a child, who does not think,” Nambahu said.
He also said that the youth should not insult elders.
During last weekend’s Khomas SPYL elective congress, Paulus Immanuel was elected as regional secretary, while Elizabeth Kamati is the new regional information secretary and Philemon Nahum is the new regional treasurer.
Tina Amutenya, Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, Lydia Jason and Sylas Mungoba are also new faces in the SPYL regional executive committee.
The youth league’s regional delegates to this weekend’s Swapo Khomas regional congress are Sam Hamupolo, Sophia Negonga, Austin Kwenani and Foibe Shoolongela.
