ON the 15 July, Land Rover Owners Namibia (LRON) offered another exciting off-road adventure on the edge of the Kalahari, after being invited as a guest of one of its members on farm Butiaba.
Land Rover drivers came from all corners of Namibia to spend a camping weekend on the farm and 31 vehicles took part in the driving challenges.
An official Land Rover dealer in Namibia even sent two of its employees along with a Discovery Sport, which has not yet been officially launched. On the Saturday morning, the driving challenge took place on a well prepared off-road track and included search and answer games, and in the afternoon, the drivers could show off their driving skills in the soft sand of the Kalahari linear dunes. Both events offered the drivers ample opportunity to get to know their vehicles’ abilities and to test them in a safe and controlled environment. A couple of times, the recovery of stuck vehicles presented a great opportunity to members to also spring into action, who had participated in past recovery training and sand driving events. Land Rover Owners Namibia not only organises training and off-road events, it also places emphasis on social responsibility. Last year, proceeds of N$30 000 from the first Namibia Land Rover Festival were handed over to Save the Rhino Trust (STR) with further events such as the Oude Rust and Nuts For Dogs collecting, in addition to much needed goods, another N$30 000 for the Old Age Home Oude Rust and N$10 000 for the SPCA. This year, the breakfast event at the Dagbreek School for the Intellectually Impaired was supported with an additional N$12 000 donation to the school, and various goods and food items were also sponsored. LRON members took the hostel children on a little off-road trip into the adjacent river bed in their Land Rovers, with some of the boys showing great interest in the vehicles, while everybody had a great time.
