A 23-year-old woman was beaten to death with a mahangu pounding stick by her boyfriend on Monday night, at Ondjokwe village in the Oshikoto region.
According Oshikoto regional crime investigation coordinator, Naomi Katjiua, the deceased was home preparing dinner, when the suspect arrived at her house from the Okatokele cuca shops, demanding to use her cellphone.
“A quarrel erupted and the suspect took a mahangu pounding stick and hit the deceased twice on the head. The deceased ran out of the house, but the suspect pursued her and caught up with her.
“He continued the assault, until she become unconscious. The suspect then left the scene and went to his house,” Katjiua said.
She added that the couple had a history of domestic violence, but that this had never been previously reported to the police.
The deceased was identified as Rauha Kamati, who has been in a relationship with the suspect for about five years.
They have a 17-month-old baby girl.
The suspect was arrested, and but is yet to appear in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court.
In another separate incident, the body of a newborn baby was found frozen and wrapped in plastic bags at the Tsumeb Municipality dumping site.
The body was discovered by a group of women, who were going through the rubbish dump, in a bid to find recyclable items to sell.
“It is alleged that the suspect gave birth to a baby and put the body in a freezer, after which she wrapped it in plastic bags and threw it in the dustbin,” said Katjiua.
The suspect is still unknown at this stage, she added.
Police investigations are ongoing to trace the mother of the dumped baby, and a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
