THREE government ministries have been fingered in a damning performance audit report, compiled by the Office of Auditor-General, for having failed to adequately put in place environmental monitoring and pollution control measures, and for failing to carry out rehabilitation activities at mining sites across the country between 2011 and 2015.
Included in the report, tabled by the Finance Ministry in the National Assembly recently, are findings by Auditor-General Junias Kandjeke that contaminated seepage from the Otjihase Copper Mine’s tailings dams were released into the Kuruma River system, and that the surface water in the Oamites River is polluted with sewage, due to discharge from the waste water treatment plant at the abandoned Oamites mine.
