The Swapo Politburo today nominated President Hage Geingob unopposed as the ruling party’s presidential candidate for its upcoming elective congress, which is slated for 23 to 26 November.
Geingob’s preferred choice for Swapo vice-president, International Relations and Cooperation Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, his choice for secretary-general (SG), Minister of Urban and Rural Development Sophia Shaningwa, as well as his candidate for the deputy SG post, former Deputy Prime Minister Marco Hausiku, were also nominated unopposed.
Geingob had opened the floor for nominations at the politburo, and asked its 24 members to indicate who they wanted to stand for the top four positions.
Swapo Secretary-General Nangolo Mbumba nominated Geingob for the party presidency post, and he was endorsed unopposed.
When politburo members were asked who they preferred for the Swapo vice-presidency post, Khomas Regional Governor Laura McLeod-Katjirua, who some were trying to portray as anti-Geingob, nominated the president’s candidate, Nandi-Ndaitwah, who was endorsed unopposed.
Minister of Justice Albert Kawana, nominated Shaningwa as the politburo’s preferred candidate for the SG post, and she too was endorsed unopposed.
The country’s Vice-President Nickey Iyambo, nominated Hausiku as the deputy SG candidate, and he was endorsed unopposed by the politburo.
During his opening remarks at last week’s politburo meeting, Geingob said that cadres from many quarters had asked him to announce those cadres with whom he will work, to avoid two centres of power in the party.
“However, this does not mean that people cannot nominate their preferred candidates or campaign. I am merely carrying out this exercise, in order to guide those members who have asked me to reveal my slate,” Geingob said.
He said further that he had drawn up his list “after extensive consultations with senior party cadres, as well as the Presidential Advisory Council”, on which Founding Father Dr Sam Nujoma and former President Hifikepunye Pohamba serves.
