… Mannetti urged to keep trophy on home soil
By John Tuerijama
DEPUTY Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, Agnes Tjongarero, has urged Brave Warriors head coach Ricardo Mannetti to successfully dispatch Zimbabwe, when they meet in the fourth edition of the Dr Hage Geingob Soccer Cup on 11 November.
Speaking at the launch of the cup competition on Wednesday, Tjongarero said the trophy should remain in the country.
Mannetti, who was asked to approach the podium by Dr Hage Geingob Soccer Cup organising committee member Amos Shiyuka, promised the deputy minister that the trophy will remain on home soil.
“You must promise me that you will indeed keep the trophy here at home. I also call on the footballing fraternity to make sure that the stadium is filled to capacity. Football fans must come from as far as Katima Mulilo and Oranjemund,” Tjongarero said. The no-nonsense minister of sport said that all football stakeholders must play their role in the promotion of the Dr Hage Geingob Soccer Cup.
When pressed by sports scribes on the sidelines of the launch, Mannetti said that since taking over the reins of the Brave Warriors, pressure had become the order of the day.“I promise to deliver what was asked of me, with my charges,” he added.
Namibia Football Association (NFA) President, Frans Mbidi, said the international friendly match will be played on the 11 November, which is the FIFA-accredited day.
The match, which is slated for the Sam Nujoma Stadium at 16h00, will have an impact on the Brave Warriors FIFA ranking. But most importantly, the international friendly serves as preparation for the Brave Warriors, ahead of the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals, early next year.
The host country for the CHAN finals is yet to be announced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), after Kenya was stripped off the hosting rights.
Mbidi said that Brave Warriors trouncing of Zimbabwe in their decisive CHAN qualifier was no fluke.
On 11 November, fans will be treated to various competitions during the halftime break and before the match kickoff, while also being entertained by local musicians.
