… Children of civil servants and their moms go hungry
By Patience Nyangove
THE ministries of finance, safety and security and education have left a multitude of women and their children to go to bed hungry, after they failed to pay over the maintenance garnished from the salaries of civil servants to the Office of the Judiciary, so that the money can be disbursed to the beneficiaries, Confidente has learnt.
In Khomas alone, 28 000 women collect maintenance payments at court.
Confidente understands that although the Ministry of Finance outlawed the issuing out of cheques from 1 July, with the Bank of Namibia (BoN) giving 15 December as the last date for these financial instruments to be drawn at Namibian banks, the finance ministry, together with others, continues to issue cheques.
This has resulted in the Office of the Judiciary refusing to accept the maintenance money cheques, leaving women and their children stranded.
