… Namibians, other SADC citizens to be tested
SOUTH African health authorities on Tuesday issued a malaria alert after high numbers of malaria cases were reported.
Residents from far northern KwaZulu-Natal and neighbouring countries, such as Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia, who present with fever and “flu-like” symptoms, must have an urgent blood test.
The Department of Health said everyone is at risk of contracting malaria in malarious areas, but children under five years of age, pregnant women, people with compromised immune systems, travellers from non-endemic areas and immigrant workers are at higher risk.
According to the department, high numbers of malaria cases are being reported in the malaria transmission areas in northern South Africa.
