The Namibian government on Wednesday condemned the rebels who killed at least 15 Tanzanian United Nations peacekeepers last week in the eastern parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, said the government has learned with deep horror and revulsion, of the wanton killing of peacekeepers within the Tanzanian contingent, who were serving with the United Nations.
“The government of Namibia unreservedly condemns this contemptible act of atrocity, committed against the peacekeepers.“The government of Namibia wishes to extend its sympathy and fraternal solidarity to the government and the sisterly people of the United Republic of Tanzania, over this act of dastardly violence, perpetrated against those whose mission is to help the government of the DRC restore peace and security to that country, and its long-suffering people,” she said in a media statement.
Nandi-Ndaitwah added that the government also extends its condolences to the bereaved families of the gallant peacekeepers, who made the supreme sacrifice in the cause of peace.
She also wished the wounded a speedy recovery and said further that the Namibian government calls on MONUSCO to provide all the necessary assistance and support to the Congolese National Army, to pursue and bring to justice those responsible for this barbaric act of unprovoked aggressions against the peacekeepers.
Associated Press reported on Tuesday that the UN Deputy Special Representative for DRC, David Gressly, said that those who staged the assault, which also wounded 50, will pay for their actions.
The 7 December attack, which took place about 45km from Beni, was the deadliest single attack on a UN peacekeeping mission in nearly 25 years.
Five Congolese soldiers also were killed in the attack. The peacekeeping base has been repeatedly attacked by rebels from the Allied Democratic Forces group. Tanzania’s ambassador in DRC, Paul Ignace Mella, has called on the UN to protect its peacekeeping soldiers. The UN peacekeeping mission in DRC is the largest in the world.
