A six-year-old Swakopmund girl died Monday night after her neighbour’s shack, in which she was sleeping, caught fire.
Police in a statement, said that the incident happened around 21:39 at the DRC informal settlement.
It is alleged that the now deceased, Annel Haoses went to bed in a shack belonging to her mother’s friend after dinner before the tragic incident happened.
Neighbours were reportedly woken up by someone screaming for help before they realized that the shack was on fire. It was too late to save the little girl, as the shack and other belongings burnt to ashes.
“The neighbours heard someone screaming for help at which point the shack was already in flames. It was too late for them to rescue the deceased,” the police report reads in part.
The shack owner managed to escape the fire but sustained moderate injuries. She was taken to Swakopmund State Hospital for medical help.
Police investigations are underway to establish what started the deadly fire. In a separate incident, 44-year-old from Kuisebmund in Walvis Bay was arrested for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl on several occasions.
Police indicated that the rape happened between December 2017 and 16 January when the girl’s family moved into premises where the suspect had been living.
The girl reported her ordeal to her younger niece who in turn informed her mother.
The suspect was expected to appear before the Walvis Bay Magistrate Court on Tuesday and police investigations continue.
