A group of learners at Eldorado S e c o n d a r y School in Khomasdal, under the banner Eldorado Pan African Student Society (EPASS) have planned to give their school a facelift.
This is part of their efforts to improve academic performance and raise the standard of living of leaners.
According to EPASS coordinator Brigitte Kloppers, who is also a History teacher at the school, the learners are divided into four groups that cater for the various mandates of the initiative.
These are responsible for painting classrooms, planting trees, plumbing, setting up benches on the school premises.
Kloppers said they had already received paint from Pupkewitz Megabuild and were expected to start with the painting of classrooms during the midterm break.
Speaking to Confidente some students McAllen and Julene Bok said they wanted to create a new environment at their school.
“We are going to paint the walls, write inspirational quotes and draw pictures to attract the eyes of everyone who passes by. We want to inspire everyone,” they said, adding that it was a privilege for them to participate in such an initiative.
“Somebody might see it as just an ordinary thing, but it means a lot to the school learners. When they come for their classes and they nicely painted, they can sit comfortably and learn.
“I will encourage anybody to do things like this because at the end of the day, one can say that they have done something positive to influence other people,” they said.
Another student, Ester Malima said they had come up with the idea of erecting benches due to the fact that learners had nowhere to sit during their break times. Malima said they had managed to get more than 200 tyres from good Samaritans, for this initiative as well as pallets to assemble seats.“We are a set of learners who have made up our minds to be agents of progress. We have come out to let fellow learners know that as learners, we can also contribute to the development of the school,” she said.
Klopper lauded the gesture and described it as highly motivational.
She said that the gesture would be remembered by the community adding that it would contribute to giving a positive perception of Eldorado learners in the minds of the community members.
