…As CHEC records 2 million hours without injury
CHINA Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), last week celebrated 2 million man hours without a Lost Time Injury (LTI) in the container terminal on reclaimed the land project, part of the Walvis Bay port expansion project.
This means that a total of 2 million hours have been worked without a single person being injured which led to them to being booked off from work.
This significant milestone was reached already at the end of February but was celebrated with staff and Namport management on Wednesday, March 28.
In a speech read on his behalf, Project Manager, Yuanfei Feng said that: “Safety is a serious concern on a major project such as this. Where man and machine come into contact, there will always be a risk of harm. At CHEC, we continuously aim to minimize that risk through effective management of our Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) procedures.”
He continued that this outstanding achievement reiterates CHEC’s commitment to safety and demonstrates that CHEC is 100% committed when it comes to HSE.
“We aim to ensure that when our workers come to work in the morning, they go home to their families later in the afternoon without any injury or harm to them,” he said.
He further said that the achievement is more remarkable considering the various challenges the company has had to deal with, including language and communication barriers; production and design and the on-going HSE education of the CHEC workforce.
CHEC strongly believes that this achievement is the result of a work culture based on hard work and commitment to: teamwork, strong management support and personal ownership of HSE.
Feng concluded: “CHEC staff must not allow our pride in this achievement to turn into complacency. We must not shift our focus from ensuring that work is carried out in a safe manner. Safety is everyone’s concern. We must remain vigilant and we must all proclaim that, I am my brother’s keeper, meaning that we must look out for each other at all times.”
