AFTER the birth of her son in 2010, Beatha Shitemba (BS) realised that there was a gap in the local market for quality and trendy kiddy products. Seven years down the line, the mother of one established Nels Babies, a baby boutique that specialises in trendy and exclusive baby and kids’ bedding, nursery décor and accessories.
The boutique’s niche, is one that seeks to help parents create an environment where their children can thrive, primarily one that is safe, warm, loving and inspires creativity.
From serene nurseries, fun playrooms to beautiful bedrooms, there are no rules or limitations when decorating a room for a child with Nels Babies which also provides custom-made and hand crafted products to client’s specifications.
Apart from a national footprint, the company also exports its products to international markets.
Speaking to Confidente’s Marianne Nghidengwa (MN) this week, Beatha spoke passionately about her company that first opened its doors in Windhoek but has grown into a continental brand providing gorgeous, rare and high-quality products at reasonable prices.
She also highlighted that while everyone’s decorating style is different and while they pay attention to what is current and trendy, they do not limit themselves to a particular style. From traditional to contemporary, Nels Babies offers it all.
MN: Tell us about yourself and upbringing?
BS: I’m the oldest of five children. I was partially raised in the north and Oranjemund. Being the first born, I was forced to work hard and set a good example for my siblings. I was very focused in terms of my academic life and I always made sure that the decisions I made had a good influence on my siblings.
At the moment, I’m a single mom to a seven year-old boy Nehemiah, a full time employee, student as well as managing Nels Babies, a company I founded.
MN: Tell us about the establishment of Nels Babies and what it offers?
BS: Nels Babies is a Namibian owned baby boutique that specialises in trendy and exclusive baby and kids’ bedding, nursery décor and accessories. It helps parents create thriving environments for their children by putting together a space that is safe, warm, loving and creative. Our mission is to help mothers create the perfect nursery for their little ones.
MN: What are challenges and opportunities facing the baby company?
BS: Like any other startup company, the challenge is always access to capital or funding. Nels Babies is responding to the needs of design conscious new clients (parents) who are looking to create the most stimulating and comfortable environment for their precious new arrivals. Our world class business niche is finding itself in new markets and we are building our loyal customer base in key countries across the African continent.
MN: With many baby companies on the market, including well established ones, what makes Nels Babies unique?
BS: What sets our children are bedding apart are the patterns. Our fabric is very different from what you can find in most of the other shops and our products are handmade with 100 percent cotton. We also keep abreast of the current trends in the industry.
MN: What advice do you have for the youth, fellow women on becoming entrepreneurs to better Namibia?
BS: Being an entrepreneur is very challenging, but at the end of the day it is worth it. The thrill of establishing a brand keeps me motivated. The mere fact that ideas can become a reality is exciting. It’s rewarding being an entrepreneur. I’m driven by the possibilities of achieving financial independence and being able to make a difference in communities. It’s not an easy task starting a business, but once the first step is taken, everything falls in place.
MN: What has life taught you that you wish to share with others?
BS: Your life is 100 percent your responsibility. Don’t let anyone control it or make decisions for you. You have the power to create the life you want.
MN: What don’t people know about you?
BS: I got divorced four years ago and it was because of that experience that I was propelled into entrepreneurship. My ex-husband leaving me as a single mom gave me a push and a drive to strive for more in life and to make a difference.
MN: Just what do you do for a little fun?
BS: I love spending time with my son and nothing can be compared to that. Besides that, I love the outdoors, playing the keyboard and watching movies.
