IT is really funny sometimes how far some people would or can go to seek attention, not only from the media, but from the general public in actions that can either earn positivity or at times go horribly wrong.
Before I get to my point, let’s break the words ‘publicity stunt’ down.
Publicity is notice or attention given to someone or something by the media and a stunt is when someone does something unusual to attract attention.
According to Wikipedia, a publicity stunt is a planned event designed to attract the public’s attention to the event’s organizers or their cause. These could be professionally organized, or set up by amateurs.
And in Namibia some publicity stunts are somewhat disheartening.
About two weeks ago, a picture showing the bruised neck of Oteya started circulating on social media that depicted that she was being abused by her husband Suleimen Kyababa, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Ogopa Butterfly, the label she is signed to.
Coincidentally, Oteya was set to release a new music video on gender based violence on Sunday 13 May, according to her social media, but that did not materialize until three days later.
Upon close inspection, the bruises did match the ones in the music video where she can be seen trying to cover the fake bruises with a scarf, which led me to think that Oteya was clearly not abused at all.
Ogopa Butterfly did however release a statement saying that Kyababa’s phone was stolen and the picture was leaked by whoever stole the phone, which once again raised eyebrows.
I personally think that they staged the whole thing for publicity. Either to promote the GBV music video or possibly to overshadow female artist of the year winner Sally Boss Madam’s new music video Net So, which was launched a day before the fake picture started making its rounds on social media.
Maybe I’m a crazy conspiracy theorist, but if it was a publicity stunt, it did not do too many rounds in mainstream media.
However many people on social media had an online frenzy talking and tweeting about the possibility of the singer being abused by her husband, which in turn managed to get about 8000 views on YouTube for her video.
