TWENTY-one-year-old Mbakondja Hanavi and Joshua Kahee – 23, who hail from the town of Okakarara in the Otjozondjupa region are the masterminds behind the most anticipated show in that town, the Miss Okakarara.
The two, with assistance from other youth from the town are putting together the third installment of the Miss Okakarara beauty pageant set for August.
Hanavi and Kahee first organised the now annual event when they were 19 and 20 years old respectfully, with the sponsorship help from Sammy Beer House, Tjituri Guest House, Eben Printing Press and many other individuals from the town and the show has been a hit since then.
Speaking to Confidente, Hanavi explained that the aim of the event is to showcase young talent and serve as a starting point for Okakarara youth who dream of becoming models.
Hanavi added that, as a child, he saw some young girls in Okakarara participate in pageants at primary and secondary schools levels, excluding those girls not in school.“We sat down and discussed on how we can help young girls realise their dreams and then decided that this pageant will be an opportunity that will serve as a stepping stone and growth for them,” Hanavi noted. The two youth do not just end with the pageant; they also donate money raised from the show to the Okakarara community through various projects.
Last year, the team donated 10 blankets to learners from Okakarara Secondary School during winter, while they held a free bikini carwash the year before.
Miss Okakarara is now an annual event that happens every August in the Okakarara town where youths between the ages of 16-25 who are residents of the town, can participate in.
To raise money for this year’s pageant, the team will be hosting a gala dinner on May 30 at the Khomasdal Community Hall.
“The purpose of the dinner is to raise awareness on the upcoming pageant and to share what we have so far done. The successes, challenges and where we are today.
“It is more of an information sharing dinner and also a way to gather people from Okakarara here in Windhoek to come together and have dinner.”It is Hanavi’s hope that one day the show can attract modeling agencies and big names in the modeling industry to attend the show and inspire youths from the town.”
Registrations for this year pageant will start after the gala dinner.
