IT is very hard to find honest people those days. But we often only blame public figures for not being honest while we ignore ordinary people. But public figures were also ordinary people and ordinary people will also become public figures one day.
The social media has come to reveal who we are. Social media is the epitome of a confused and dishonest society. Even school dropouts are graduates on the social media. Almost everyone is either employed, self-employed or a student. Even beggars are employed. So what does it tells you?
It meant that people are very desperate for great titles and positions. No one wants to be a hewer of wood or a drawer of water on the social media. Everyone wants a great title but no one wants to work for it.
There are more liars than honest people on the social media. And the person who tells lies on the social media is likely to be deceitful in real life.
No wonder we have so many intellectuals in Namibia. But in reality they are not. An intellectual has to provide light where there is darkness. But why Namibia is still so dark and hopeless? Are you really an intellectual when you could be bought with a glass of wine, a plate of salad or a piece of kapana?
An intellectual should give impartial and unbiased views. He should not fear to criticize or praise anyone. But our so called intellectuals often take sides. What we have in Namibia is just a bunch of noisy gate boys/girlsand brainwashed chickens that criticizes certain people while worshiping others. That is very dangerous and divisive.
At the end of the day we will end up with a divided nation whereby some are ready to kill for Sam Nujoma, some would kill for Pohamba, while others would kill for Geingob and so on.
No one is a saint to be praised all the time. And no one is a devil to be criticized all the time. Namibians should move away from behaving like rat intellectuals competing for a piece of cheese.
We must not confuse feelings with thinking. Neither should we confuse noise with wisdom. Having a sharp tongue does not really make one an intellectual.
A true intellectual should lead moonshot thinking, not streetsor Facebook fights. A true intellectual should not pick individual fights; he should rather fight on behalf of the masses. A true intellectual should win the hearts of the masses, but not the hearts of politicians and the rich. True intellectuals are not really interested in materialisms, positions, winning awards or sleeping in five star hotels. A true intellectual would rather die poor but with his principles than to die rich but without principles.
We need real intellectuals in Namibia. But not these noisy ‘gate boys/girls’ that are simply fighting for the keys of the gate.
A better world for all is possible. But a better world will only be achieved if everyone is prepared to become a wood that would burns the pot from which/where the future generations will eat from. True intellectuals have a duty to lead the masses towards the realization of that dream.
When leaders become greedy, hopeless and useless, it is the intellectuals who are supposed to take the lead and give hope to the masses.
An intellectual should be like a bulb. It provides light whether there is a devil or a saint in the room. And it gives light both to the poor and the rich.
Where is our Cornel West, Steve Biko or King Martin Luther Junior in these difficult and destitute times? Namibia has gone so bad that today if you are raising a little girl you are probably raising a future prostitute. She will never get a job so she will end up sleeping with any men just for trivial benefits.
If you are raising a little boy, you are probably raising a future thug/ druggy. Is that what Kaptein Hendrik Witbooi, King Mandume and others had died for? And yet you are not even ashamed of calling yourself an intellectual after getting drunk from alcohol bought with stolen money.
An intellectual should always act like a lion. A lion would always roar no matter how hungry it is. Intellectuals should not allow themselves to be bought with the spoils of corruption. An intellectual without principles is worse than a fool with principles.
If you are just an ant you will never roar no matter how hard you try. Yes, your fellow ants might say you are roaring. But to others you are just an ant that is trying to roar. So if there are real intellectuals in Namibia, then they must continue to roar.
To these who chose to be ‘gate boys/girls,’ one day your gates will break down. Your masters will disappears and you will be left alone in the wilderness.
If you don’t believe me, ask the so called intellectuals that were on the side of apartheid. Today no one even listen to them. They chose properties over principles. But today they had none.
