ACCORDING to skinnyartist. com, branding is a process of clarifying who you are as an artist and what your goals are. A strong brand can capture a potential fan or patron’s attention and have them remember you and connect with your work.
But do local artists in any art discipline actually know the importance of branding or even know how to brand themselves?
I mean this is an integral part of actually shaping the arts and culture industry to the next level, or at least to a point where the arts is taken very seriously in Namibia.
And if you are not selling or making it big, it’s probably because people do not like you, they cannot find you or they simply do not know you exist.
I keep on emphasising that as ant artist, there is more to just creating the art. You are an artistic entrepreneur and your art is your “big” business.
But after you realise that your talent can be exposed to the public then you should understand who you are as a creative. You have to know exactly how different and unique your art is then you will be able to take it to the next step.
One should also know what exactly you hoping to achieve with your brand as an artist. For instance, do you want to simply share your art publicly and gain more exposure as an artist? Or do you want to just start doing your art part-time or turn your art into a full-time career?
This is simply just setting goals, which should not be difficult if you are passionate about what you do. And if you do want to make money off your art then reading or researching about how many different ways you can make money should be a priority.
Regardless, if you prefer to be “low key” or very open with your fans or potential audiences, then you need to make sure you are accessible.
For starters, take advantage of powerful online tools like social media. Many people turn to social media as a way to stay connected and plenty of artists have gotten a return on marketing their art online with the right online marketing tools.
If all goes well and your brand succeeds, it will be very essential to keep the brand alive, which means that you have to keep on rebranding so that people still stay attracted to your art.
