YOUNG chess enthusiasts from Okakarara, in the Otjozondjupa region, will ply their trade in a tournament at the end of the year which is expected to draw a huge following. The chess tournament is pencilled for 15 December, 2018, at the town’s Community Hall and will see the national chess stars and leadership of the Namibia Chess Federation (NCF) gracing the event. Dubbed the ‘Anatech Namibia Chess tournament’ the tournament will be the first-ever chess competition at the town. The main sponsor Anatech Namibia was established in 2006 as a training company for various laboratory and health products including consumable and instrumentation. Event Organiser, Icha Cirro Pritto Hukununa, told Confidente that the idea is to have the youth of the town and surrounding areas exposed to the sport. He said that traditionally young people only take part in football and netball tournaments during the December holidays. “We have these young people competing in this event and after winning either the football or netball tournament they end up drinking alcohol excessively,” he said. “We want to change that and as you know chess will have a lasting impact academically as it will be an exercise to their brain plus winners will walk away with prize monies including chess boards and cash,” emphasised Hukununa. He said chess has a positive advantage and it keeps players busy during the festive season and that the brain exercise comes handy during the school calendar. “It is really a plus hence chess is the only sport that will have a meaningful impact to their life. Entry is free as we want to have as more competitors as possible,” said Hukununa. The prize money will vary according to the categories, but organisers expect stiff competition in the open tournament.
