WALVIS BAY Mayor, Alderman Immanuel Wilfried, has said that the municipality spends on average N$2, 3 million annually to keep the coastal town clean thus urging residents to maintain tidiness.
This the Mayor revealed recently when he wrapped up the Team Up to Clean Up campaign that was launched last year. He said that while the municipal council is committed to playing its part in striving for a litter and waste-free environment, it is also important for residents to keep their environment waste-free.
“On average, the municipality spends N$2.3 million a year in keeping Walvis Bay’s public spaces clean and we need to play a more active role as custodians of our environment,” Wilfried said.
The Team Up to Clean Up campaign was aimed at consolidating efforts towards making a difference by encouraging the public and all stakeholders to keep the environment clean.
The Mayor noted that the campaign was especially designed because the cleanliness of various areas in Walvis Bay were fast becoming a rising concern as streets are often filled with litter and waste.
In July the campaign took a different direction, targeting car wreck removals free of charge and was extended to 3 August. With the deadline passed, Mayor Wilfried said that removal fee rates and applicable regulations relating to public health, the by-law relating to cleanliness of premises and the road traffic and transport regulations 53 of 2001 will now be enforced.
“A car wreck is a disused vehicle or machinery that often times we see accumulated, dumped or deposited in our residential areas. The car wrecks we are targeting are primarily those in backyards and dumped in streets or on pavements. It is important to provide proof of ownership of the car wreck to be removed for free,” he said.
In July, the Mayor warned that those who do not make use of the grace period continue to break the law by dumping car wrecks will be prosecuted under the relevant legislation. “So once again, let us all cooperate to ensure a clean and healthy Walvis Bay,” he warned at the time.
