HARLEY -Davidson Windhoek has won the ‘Battle of the Kings’ Africa Division competition, after their customised motorcycle ‘Hollywood Dream’ beat seven others top contending dealerships in South Africa. Harley-Davidson Windhoek’s Advanced Technician Mareé Smit was the man behind the make-over and took the spotlight when Windhoek was crowned the overall winner last Friday. Having opened its door in 2016, Harley-Davidson Windhoek, is the youngest dealership on the continent December 2016, and was a force to be reckoned with from the start of the competition. This is the first time Harley-Davidson Windhoek has entered the Custom King battle, beating the two finalists as they battled it out in the top three categories. The rivals were Har-ley-Davidson Clearwater and Nelspruit’s Big Five dealership. “Our dealership is very proud of this achievement as we were up against some stiff competition,” said Smit explaining that all the teams had a budget amount of N$75 000 to customise their bikes, with the cash winnings covering this expense. ‘Hollywood Dream’ was customised from a Harley-Davidson 48 Sportster, which was a special order directly from Harley-Davidson USA. It is now displayed and for sale on the showroom floor. The project took five months of planning from the start to finish which included ordering of parts, some of which were brought in from Germany as well as the USA. It took the workshop team more than two weeks to customise the bike. Some of the components which completed the new look, were new handle bars, a shattered flake glitter tank, some ‘old’ brass collection details, a hand stitched tan saddle elevated on a spring, front spoiler, plus engraved white wall tyres to mention some. Smit has had an interest in building bikes since he was a young lad, and has been running the Harley-Davidson Windhoek workshop since it opened its doors two years ago. With nearly a decade of motorcycle experience under his belt, he also brought a new dimension to the Custom King’s battle, which is a prestigious win for Namibia’s only and premier Harley-Davidson dealership. Meanwhile thousands of Harley-Davidson riders took part in the 115h Harley-Davidson Milwaukee Anniversary Parade, which was celebrated by owners from around the world, as this brand of motor bike continues to maintain its iconic status.
