SWAKOPMUND resident Dirk Jacobus Visser (57) was found dead in his bedroom at Crayfish street 27, last Saturday at around 11h30.
It is suspected that the deceased shot himself with a revolver which was found in his right hand. The police also found a shotgun in the room. His body was discovered after Visser’s daughter who is based in Mali requested a family friend to go check on him as she could not get hold of him.
According to the family friend, Francois Jacobs, the late Visser was last seen alive during the morning hours of Friday, 31 August. It is alleged that he suffered from depression. No possible break-in or forced entry to his house was observed and thus, no foul play is suspected. His next of kin were informed.
Also at Swakopmund, a 44-year old man, John William Isaks committed suicide by hanging himself. His body was found by his girlfriend, Othilie Hanstein, last Saturday at about 13h00. The deceased was apparently hanging from an electric cable, attached to a geyser at his home in Swakopmund’s Matutura suburb. According to the Erongo police crime coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, the girlfriend stated that the two of them were together at a bar the previous night and after a quarrel erupted between them, the deceased left and went home alone, and spent the night at a friend’s place. A suicide note, addressed to Hanstein was left behind.
On Sunday morning between 03h40 and 04h00 at Harambee Informal Settlement in Karibib, Josefine Beukes (47) burnt to death and beyond recognition when the shack she was sleeping in caught fire.
Her sister indicated that the deceased came home from a drinking spree. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, but it is suspected that she might have fallen asleep while the candle was still alight leading to the fire. Police investigations continue.
