FASHION weeks all around the world are industry events wherein fashion designers, brands or “fashion houses” display their latest collections to potential buyers and the media. These events often influence trends for the current and upcoming seasons. In Namibia fashion weeks are still fairly a new concept, with only the third edition of the annual Windhoek Fashion Week (WFW) 2018, being launched by the organisers. Main organiser and Chief Brand Officer of Alvaro Media Group, Kalistu Mukoroli, says interest for WFW 2018 has been massive with both local and international designers, models, media and industry professionals anxiously awaiting more announcements. WFW is set to take place from 6 to 10 November 2018 in Windhoek. “The designer selection process is currently underway whereby the WFW Team, Fashion Council and South African members are busy going through all application forms and sketches to select the designers that will be showcasing at WFW 2018 for autumn and winter, the designers will be announced later this month,” said Mukoroli. He further noted that the model casting held was successful, with a record number of 450 models within Windhoek that tried their luck to have an opportunity to model at the WFW. “This is double the number of models that came to cast for last year’s WFW and with this huge turnout it shows that the industry is growing and models need the platform which is fashion week,” he said. Furthermore Mukoroli said that casting will continue in Ongwediva, and Swakopmund. The WFW is open to everyone in Namibia, whether a model, designer or industry professionals, to participate in as well as making use of international industry professionals that will be part of it. This will allow skills transfer and networking for possible collaboration. WFW is also looking at creating a platform for accessories designers to be included in Fashion Week this year, and is open to collaborations. “We are looking at hosting about 30 or more local and international designers that will be showcasing at Windhoek fashion week this year and we also invited international media to cover the event alongside local media,” Mokoroli said.
