THREE of Namibia’s most decorated rugby players will miss out on the end of year rugby tour to Europe as they are currently nursing injuries. The Namibia Rugby Limited (NRL), the business arm of the Namibia Rugby Union (NRU), recently announced the names of players forming part of the European tour. Missing from the squad are popular rugby household names; Eugene Jantjies, Leneve Damens and Cristo van der Merwe. NRL public relations officer Daniella Filipovic told Confidente that the national rugby team is set to kick off their three-week tour against Russia on 10 November, 2018. They are also scheduled to test their strength against Spain on 17 November with their final European date penciled in for 24 November against Portugal. “Namibia is excited to take on these teams, of which two are rated above us on world ranking,” Filipovic said, adding that the tour forms part of the extensive campaign to prepare Namibia for the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Tokyo, Japan. The end of the year tour by World Rugby includes all participating countries that have qualified for the Rugby World Cup 2019. Filipovic further said that apart from the European tour being essential for the global rugby spectacle, it is aligned with the goals set out for the Namibian team to increase the level of competitiveness in the Rugby World Cup come next year. The selection made by the director of rugby, national team head coach Phil Davies, is based on striving to identify players who have potential to perform at World Cup test match intensity and focused on innate ability, equity and fairness.
