TALENT is generally seen as an innate ability or a gift that you are born with. You either have it or you do not. We often attribute talent to people with brilliant abilities or use it as an excuse as to why we can or cannot be exceptional at a given ability. If you worry that you are not talented enough and second guess yourself constantly, then you do not even deserve to think about doing anything you love. In other words, whatever your chosen creative pursuit, you will simply not feel good enough to pursue it. You probably feel unworthy or unsure. Maybe you compare yourself to others in your field, to other people you are convinced are sincerely talented and amazing and actually good enough. Its 2018, get over yourself and do what you want to do. If you are a constant social media user, you will start to notice that people less talented then you can be way more famous or more viral than you. This is probably because, they believed in themselves and acknowledged their self-doubt. That is when you start to acknowledge their effect on you. After that try and refocus. Refocus your attention on the world, on your surroundings. Refocus your attention on sunsets and strangers, on loved one’s faces, on tonight and tomorrow’s stars and on kapana and vetcakes. Because when humans focus on the doing, on the writing, on the painting, on the picture-taking, we really cannot go wrong. You really do not need to be (particularly) intelligent or skilled to get access to opportunities or forge a successful career. And, no, you do not need to be beautiful or born with a silver spoon in your mouth to make it in this world either. All you need is someone in your corner who believes in you, even if that person is you. Even when your skills are mediocre, a wise combination of mediocrity can turn you into something priceless. Individual skills are common. Combinations are rarer. If you want to raise your value, take a step back from your strengths, and consider building a broader combination of them. With regards to success, there are certain qualities that can hold greater value than talent alone, which are desire, persistence and hard work. And while having natural talent is good, it can still prevent someone to achieve something. Like Robert Half once said, “Hard work without talent is a shame, but talent without hard work is a tragedy”. It’s a cliché to say that hard work beats talent on any given day, but that may just be true, because talent is rare, but it is also extremely overrated.
